Tokar Estate Releases 2020 Carafe and Tumbler Pinot Shiraz

Tokar Estate has just released their new 2020 Carafe and Tumbler Pinot Shiraz. Winemaker Martin Siebert and Vigneron Daniel Tokar came up with the idea of a cheeky, quality red wine field blend that could be easily drunk while sitting on the couch with takeaway pizza in 2016.  The resulting Carafe & Tumbler Pinot Shiraz (affectionately known as Pinaz) was inspired by the carafes of wines in European cafés, sitting on the table alongside the salt, pepper and bread as an essential part of the meal.

The Tokar Estate 2020 Carafe and Tumbler Pinot Shiraz is an estate grown red blend of 65% Pinot Noir (MV6 clone) and 35% Shiraz (PT23 clone) grown on ancient grey clay soils in Coldstream, Yarra Valley. The fruit was harvested and immediately processed and fermented as several small lots with a combination of wild and inoculated yeasts. The wine has a large amount of whole bunch (around 30%) and it spent 10 months in large, seasoned French oak barrels in the vineyard’s cool underground cellar where it underwent a long slow wild malolactic fermentation. The wine was blended and bottled whilst still bright, fresh and lively.

The wine is bright ruby, which is mirrored in the sweet perfume of strawberries, orange peel, cocoa and green tea–almost reminiscent of Italian bitters. The medium bodied palate is big in fruit and has an attractive slipperiness in the mouth before the acid and soft tannins engage leaving the finish dry. There are flavors of rockmelon and cherries with warmed spice and roasted sesame. The wine is one for immediate enjoyment.

Siebert recommends pairing the wine with a variety of takeaway, including wood fired margherita, Peking duck pancakes, Korean fried chicken, and pulled pork sliders.

The idea of the Carafe and Tumbler range is to create fun fruit driven wines to be enjoyed casually with friends with no fuss. The winery looks for a high yum factor and a drinkability that’s off the chart without being just simple cordial-like wine. With this blend, the Pinot brings the elegance and the Shiraz brings the spice.

The Tokar Estate 2020 Carafe and Tumbler Pinot Shiraz retails for $30 AUD and is available via the brand’s official website.
