North London’s Provisions Wine & Cheese Launching Immersive Wine School

Provisions Wine & Cheese in North London has announced the launch of its wine school, officially opening in October 2021 and to be held in the store every Monday evening at 7pm. The six-week course, which will be rolled out across 2022 and beyond will cater for 12 students and welcome couples, individuals, groups of friends, colleagues and those seeking to refresh their wine tasting skills.

Led by its resident wine educator, Sam Povey, the course will give students the tools they need to explore the world of wine and get the best for their money in a shop, bar, or restaurant. True to Provisions’ ethos of championing organic wines, the school offers the only course for anyone interested in the organic wine movement with lessons focusing on wine that reflects the unique terroir of the vineyard where the grapes were grown. Sam’s immersive essons will steer guests through how to read a wine label, how to pair wine and food and offer insider tips on how to master a restaurant’s wine list whilst disproving many common preconceptions of wine and food pairings.

Provisions has curated the weekly programme to ensure that participants graduate as a wine connoisseur, easily implementing their newly gained expertise into daily life. The first week will take guests back to the basics and impart knowledge as to how to properly taste wine whilst demystifying the jargon used to describe a wine’s appearance, aroma and taste. Week 2 will see students taking a tour through the vineyards of the world, talking terroir and learning how climate influences how each bottle tastes. Weeks 3, 4 and 5 then shift to focus on white wine, red and rosé, and sparkling and sweet wines. Before guests qualify as a leading oenophile, the final week will revisit the history of wine production and explain where the money from each purchase is distributed.

Povey, a long-standing member of the Provisions family, is an ideal tutor, whose energy and passion is relatable and inspiring. Having started drinking wine during his university years, his inquisitive nature led him down the path of both training and self-teaching and he is delighted to now be able to introduce the next generation of wine connoisseurs to the world of organic wine. The Provisions team have spent the last few months trialling mini versions of the masterclasses to perfect the structure and aim to offer half day courses in the future for those already working in the hospitality industry and in need of honing their skills further.
