Jameson’s Single Pot Still Whiskey Looks Back To When Irish Whiskey Reigned Supreme

At the turn of the 19th Century, Irish whiskey dominated the UK spirits scene with 28 dedicated distilleries dotted across the island. By 1972 only two distilleries–Irish distillers (an amalgamation of John Jameson, Powers, and Cork Distilleries Company) and Bushmills (in Northern Ireland) remained. Now, Jameson is looking back at that bygone era with the addition of Jameson Single Pot Still whiskey to its core lineup.

During the 19th Century, the Jameson Bow Street Distillery in Dublin was known globally for its single pot still whiskey. However, by the 20th century, the distillery moved to a blended whiskey to attract new drinkers.

Bottled at 46% ABV, the expression was created by master distiller Kevin O’Gorman using a mashbill of malted and unmalted barley before being triple distilled. It was then aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks alongside three virgin oak cask types: American, European, and Irish.

“It has been an honour and a joy to work on rebuilding a traditional Jameson expression with an innovative twist and bringing a new member into the Jameson family,” said O’Gorman. “While crafting this whiskey, the team at Midleton Distillery worked hard to find the exact balance and flavour profile for our finished product. We wanted to showcase the quintessential notes of the single pot still style by blending the familiar ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks before bringing a new dimension with the introduction of the virgin oak casks.”

Jameson Single Pot Still whiskey is priced at €60 ($58 USD) per 700ml bottle and is available in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Dublin Airport, the UK, brand homes, and online.

In June, Jameson reconstructed its iconic 18-Year-Old whiskey, giving it a higher ABV and the packaging a sustainable revamp.
