Glen Moray Adds 1998 Barolo Finish Single Malt To Warehouse 1 Collection

Glen Moray has added a single malt whisky finished in ex-Barolo wine casks to its Warehouse 1 Collection. The collection is named after the Speyside distillery’s Warehouse 1, which is home to “innovative,” maturing casks.

Glen Moray Warehouse 1 1998 Barolo Finish is the collection’s oldest to date. The Scotch was matured in ex-bourbon casks before being moved to three casks that previously held Barolo wine for at least 18 months.

Described as “autumn in a glass,” the whisky offers aromas of summer flowers, caramel chocolates, and Werther’s Originals. The palate is one that opens with a big hit of winey tannins, with leather, and smooth oak all combining with figs, dark plum fruits, and blackberries. A gentle finish awaits, with a lingering honey smoothness. Sumptuous.

“Once again, our distillery team has bottled an absolute gem from Warehouse 1, their special place for experimentation, innovation and patience – time, as always, being one of the most important ingredients in creating our wonderful whiskies,” said Glen Moray distillery manager Iain Allan. “Our team searches the world for interesting and unusual casks, and they’re not afraid to use them to push the boundaries of flavour, as they have done with this very special 1998 Barolo Finish release. It’s a joy of a dram, a superb combination of our distillery’s sweet, light, citrus style with deeper notes of wood, caramel chocolates, plums, figs, brambles and honey.”

Glen Moray Warehouse 1 1998 Barolo Finish is the third bottling in the range, following the release of a 2005 Tokaji cask-finished whisky in June 2021 and a 2006 Sauternes Cask Matured Whisky in November 2020. The distillery expects to release another bottling in the series later this year.

Bottled at 52.9% ABV, only 863 bottles of the whisky have been created and are available from specialist shops in the UK for £139.95 ($190 USD) per 700ml bottle.
