Cabo: A Treehouse Hotel In A Mango Grove That Makes Its Own Mezcal

The Acre Baja, owners of Acre Mezcal, offers visitors to San José del Cabo a chance to stay in a treehouse nestled amongst palm trees in a mango grove. The rooms are outfitted with king beds, terraces, and outdoor showers and fans scan enjoy everything from world class dining to morning yoga to a pool on the 25 acre property.

Located in San José del Cabo, 30 miles away from the twentysomething spring break scene that dominates the better-known Cabo San Lucas, Acre Baja is baked into the culture of the city, which is known for its laid-back, artist vibe. It features boutique hotels, a local brewery, a Thursday nigh art walk and is becoming known as a culinary hotspot.

At the center of the hotel, visitors will find a farm-to-table restaurant and cocktail bar. Exposed wood and concrete accents are paired with colorful tile and a Tulum-like tropical ambiance. In fact, it’s the bar and restaurant that first brought people to the property when it opened in 2015.

In 2017, the Canadian owners, Cameron Watt and Stuart McPherson, opened the hotel’s 12 treehouses. Like the restaurant, the treehouses were a hit and the brand decided to expand further. They opened exclusive villas with tractional ownership stakes and then stepped into the spirits world with Acre Mezcal.

The mezcal brand now boasts four offerings: a tobalá, an espadín, a tepeztate, and a cenizo. To create it, the hotel owners teamed up with Jorge Burciaga, who, after going to college in the U.S. to study business in the U.S., took over his family’s mezcal business.

In August, the founders of El Silencio Mezcal will open a new boutique hotel in Oaxaca, called Casa Silencio. The new property is approximately 45 miles southeast of the city of Oaxaca.
