Wemyss Introduces Spice King Highland & Islay Aged 12 Years Whisky

Wemyss Spice King Highland & Islay Aged 12 Years Whisky

Wemyss has launched Spice King Highland & Islay Whisky Aged 12 Years. Just 5,000 bottles of the limited edition blended Scotch will be made available.

To create the Wemyss Spice King Highland & Islay Aged 12 Years Whisky, the distillery’s blenders married a total of 21 casks of single malt, selected from the Highland Islands and Isle of Islay distilleries that have been matured for at least 12 years in Hogshead oak casks. The recipe predominantly comprises secret Highland Island malt Whisky with smoky notes derived from local, 10,000 year old peat that imparts herbaceous and earthy notes. The Whisky is of natural color and is non-chill filtered.

“Spice King Highland & Islay explores a heated romance between spicy and citrus; lemon drizzle cake and custard creams are balanced with peppery dough and lavender smoke,” says the distillery. On the nose, Fondant icing, strawberry laces and foam sweets meet oat cakes and custard cream biscuits with lemon sneaking in at the end. The palate features sweet-yet-tart citrus notes that explode on the tongue with lemon curd and stewed crab apples. Peppery dough gives richness, whilst lavender, rosemary and thyme add smoke. The finish offers white pepper and herbaceous smoke lingers.

Bottled at 52% ABV, Wemyss Spice King Highland & Islay Whisky Aged 12 Years is currently available from the distillery’s official website for £52.95 ($71.35 USD).

In November, Wemyss Malts unveiled a new colorful redesign of its flagship Whisky range. The Edinburgh-based brand’s redesign features a blend of colors that were designed to reflect the flavors within each bottle.

William Wemyss is also the founder and managing director of Kingsbarns Distillery, which last week added Balcomie Whisky to its core range. The new offering from the Fife-based distillery is the first in a series of future releases that will be named after landmarks near the brand’s home.
