The Old Pharmacy

the old pharmacy

Located in a former pharmacy along Bairro Alto’s bustling Rua do Diário de Notícias, The Old Pharmacy plays home to a vast selection of Portugese wines. Like many of the drinking spots in this Lisbon neighborhood, this bar uses the warm historic setting of an old dwelling, and breathes new life into via a bar. The result is a space where visitors can unwind without having to leave the action.

Inside, glass cabinets cover the walls and bottles of wine fill their shelves. Over 200 wines are available by the glass or by the bottle. The list makes sure to include wines from throughout the country, meaning visitors can try well-loved labels such as Passadouro Reserva from the Douro, alongside lesser known vintages from vineyards just outside Lisbon.

The wine bar retains all of the elegance of the former dispensary. The glass cabinets are painted a bright, aseptic white that gives a clean, new edge, without letting go of the building’s historic qualities.

There are a variety of petiscos — Portugese tapas — available for order, which play perfect companions to the wines. Plates full of hams and cheeses make sure to keep your belly full as you move from bottle one to bottle two.

The Old Pharmacy brings a touch of old world elegance to bustling Rua do Diário de Notícias. The wide variety of wines on offer encourage visitors to explore regions of Portugal they are less familiar with, and the snacks allow them to do so while still being able to make their way home. While many bars along this street are made for revelers looking to truly let their hair down, The Old Pharmacy is made for those who wish to be in the thick of things without having to give up good conversation.
