Sbagliato

Sbagliato cocktail

“There are no mistakes, only happy accidents.” That’s what our elementary school art teacher told us. That certainly doesn’t hold true to every part of life (like that annoying neighbor child Charlie. We hate Charlie. But we love Sbaglatios.) And when it comes to mistakes, the Sbagliato cocktail is the kind we hope more people make.

The Sbagliato, also known as the Sbagliato Negroni, was supposedly created by accident, when a busy bartender mistakenly poured sparkling wine instead of gin into a Negroni. Whether the rumor is true or not, we like the story and the result is one of our favorite low ABV cocktails anywhere.

We were first introduced to the drink at Bar Clacson in Los Angeles, California and we fell in love immediately. Campari, Sweet Vermouth, and some Sparkling Wine (preferably Prosecco), what’s not to love. This is one of those drinks you can sip on all day and still manage to hold conversations late into the night.

It’s a great drink for a spring day spent outdoors or enjoyed at a small table alongside old cobblestone steps. We even like them in the confines of a cozy dark bar. It’s also the perfect drink to keep in your warchest for a party as there really aren’t enough three-ingredient cocktails that will impress a crowd. Add on the fact that it keeps a crowd from getting too messy, and it becomes the perfect libation for large gathering where you’re forced to play bartender.

This one is simple, straight, and to the point.

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 1 oz. Campari
  • 3 oz. lightly sparkling wine
  • Tools: mixing spoon
  • Glass: rocks
  • Garnish: orange wheel

Combine vermouth and Campari in an ice-filled glass. Top with sparkling wine, stir to combine and garnish.

If you’re looking to change it up a bit, try Vin d’Sange vermouth from Mommenpop.
