Ron Zacapa has added a second expression to its Heavenly Cask collection, Zacapa 23 El Alma. Back in April, the Guatemalan brand unveiled the rum range with 23 La Doma – The Taming Cask.
El Alma, meaning ‘the soul’ in Spanish, is named after the charred ex-American whiskey cask used during Zacapa’s ‘sistema solera’ ageing process. The final rum is a blend of aged reserve rums from six to 24 years old that have experienced additional ageing in an ex-whiskey cask. The resulting spirit offers hints of roasted almonds, cinnamon, and sweet toffee.
“Each of the Heavenly Cask collection celebrates one of the cask types that have been used to age Zacapa 23 by additionally ageing and emphasising the extraordinary taste sensations they individually create,” explained Lorena Vásquez, Zacapa’s master blender.
The Diageo-owned brand recommends serving the rum neat or over a large ice cube. It can also be garnished with toasted walnuts, and paired with smoked ham or beef, or Gouda cheese with orange or peach jam.
Bottled at 40% ABV, Zacapa 23 El Alma is priced at £75 ($103 USD) per 700ml bottle. It will be available in select markets beginning in November including Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Benelux, Nordics, Czech Republic, Guatemala and Panama, among others.
