Inside Manhattan’s First Axe Throwing Bar, Live Axe

Manhattan now has an axe throwing bar, Live Axe. Located on the border of SoHo and TriBeCa, it’s the borough’s first bar of its kind and offers denizens the chance to enjoy some Nordic style fun.

Live Axe has everything you need for a good (and slightly dangerous) night out. The menu is short, but finds a pleasing mix of elevated bar staples from the Peasant Sandwich (lamb confit in a middle eastern Au Jus, with lettuce, onion, tomato, cabbage mix; topped with House aioli) to flatbreads and skewers. The drink menu features a variety of cocktails and rotating craft beers. And, of course, there’s the axe throwing.

Inside, guests will find an upscale, industrial space with multiple cages around the perimeter, which is where the axes are thrown. For anyone looking to hurl a sharp object across a room, an Axe Coach will teach you proper technique and safety rules, and then will oversee and keep score once your game begins. So, in reality, the whole thing is pretty controlled and provides a great opportunity to blow off some steam. It’s basically bowling for Thor.

Rates for Live Axe start at $45 per person on weekdays and $60 per person on weekends. To make reservations, head over to the bar’s official website.

If you really find yourself getting into Manhattan’s axe throwing scene, you can join a league. If axe throwing isn’t your thing, but you still want to enjoy another of Manhattan’s firsts, on August 21, 2021, the Great Jones Distilling Company will become the first legal whiskey distillery to open its doors in Manhattan since the advent of Prohibition. Located in trendy NoHo the 28,000-square-foot, four-story space will feature a cocktail bar; an event space; a restaurant helmed by chef Adam Raksin (formerly of The Lambs Club, Per Se); and a tasting room to go along with its 500-gallon still.
