Just in time for the holidays, Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power’s wine brand has unveiled Avaline Sparkling. The new effervescent offering joins their portfolio of clean, vegan-friendly wines made with organic grapes and without unnecessary extras. The duo has also announced their producer partners as they continue to expand on their mission of transparency.
A dry, refreshing bubbly, Avaline Sparkling is a blend of Xarel·lo, Macabeo and Parellada from Penedes, Spain. In the hands of the famed producer Raventos i Blanc, it is made in the traditional method and aged 18 months on the lees, doubling the minimum aging time required for other sparkling wines from this region. This family-owned winery established in 1497 specializes in the production of sparkling wines. Both the vineyards and wines are certified organic by the Competent Body of Catalonia, while the vineyards are certified biodynamic by Demeter. Sustainability is incredibly important to the Raventos family. The vineyards are plowed by horse rather than tractor, they hand-pick their grapes and have goats and sheep maintaining the farm, creating a self-sufficient ecosystem.
Avaline’s other Spanish wine partner is the esteemed Can Rafols dels Caus, responsible for producing the popular Avaline White. Can Rafols dels Caus is a family-owned winery with Roman origins and today is one of the most dynamic properties in Penedes. The grapes are also certified organic by the Competent Body of Catalonia and are picked by hand and dry-farmed. Other sustainability measures include harvesting in the morning or at night to keep the grapes chilled. Additionally, the winery, which is almost completely underground, relies on gravity instead of pumps or heavy machinery to move the wine, further preserving energy.
For its Rose, Diaz and Power went straight to the heart of the world’s most well-known rose-producing region, Provence. Winery partner, Mas de Cadenet, (Certified Organic by Bureau Veritas) is owned by one of the oldest winemaking families in Provence, Famille Negrel. Maud and Matthieu Negrel are siblings whose family have been running and living on the estate since 1813. Using low irrigation farming and a combination of hand and machine-picked grapes, the family takes sustainability seriously. They grow chickpeas as a nitrogen source for the vines and use compost from the winery to fertilize the vineyards.
In the Southern Rhone Valley region of France, the founders selected Avaline Red’s producer, a notable winemaking family who respectfully requested their identity be kept confidential. This winery has organic certifications including Bioagricert (BIO) and Ecocert. The family implements such sustainability practices as dry farming, handpicking grapes, and cover crop management. Indigenous yeasts and cold stabilization are further utilized in the winemaking process.
“It is a true honor to work with multi-generational winemakers of such acclaim to produce Avaline wines,” said Abbott Wolfe, Avaline’s founding CEO. “Our producer partners exemplify the best of their respective regions and we couldn’t be prouder of their commitment to the same attributes as Avaline, producing clean wines by organic farming and low-intervention production. The loyalty and passion of our buyers and consumers have shown us time and time again that we chose the best partners for Avaline wines.”
Bottled at 12% ABV, Avaline Sparkling is on sale for $26 and is available for purchase online at wine.com as well as through select retailers including Meijer, United Grocers, and Market Street.
