Bar Lis Blossoms Into Hollywood’s Coolest Rooftop Hotel Bar

Bar Lis

Since opening in August 2021, Thompson Hollywood has grown into one of Los Angeles’ hippest hotels, boasting “global sophistication, hyper-local immersion and intuitive service.” Located around the corner from the iconic intersection of Hollywood and Vine, the hotel’s crowning jewel–or cherry on top–is Bar Lis, which has blossomed into one of Hollywood’s coolest rooftop bars.

Bar Lis has become somewhat of a celebrity hotspot, counting Rita Ora, Diplo, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Dylan & Cole Sprouse, and Malia Obama among its early visitors. The French Riviera-inspired rooftop lounge with wraparound views of Hollywood and Greater Los Angeles was designed by Bernadette Blanc to evoke the glory days of Brigitte Bardot in Saint-Tropez, with an upscale beachy feel and an array of vintage photographs. “Chic without pretension…. capturing the iconic spirit and playfully sophisticated vibe of the Cote D’Azur,” says Thompson.

Bar Lis sports both indoor and open-air spaces and a curated calendar of nightly entertainment. DJ sets led by talent including Ashley Smith & Bec Adams (of Les Filles), Ana Calderon, Rick Trainor and Wade Crescent, are the main attraction; while every Tuesday from 8pm on Jazz Eclectic LA brings modern-jazz to the picturesque setting.

The Terrace, meanwhile, is an all-day spot for casual coastal California-inspired cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and poolside service. Also boasting incredible city views, The daytime and early evening destination offers an array of cocktails and light bites, along with an extensive selection of rosé–available under cover or poolside. The pool area also features a separate bar and chaise lounges.

The Lobby Bar, meanwhile, is open at all hours. It features L-shaped banquettes set into the step-up on each side of the bar, while vintage-inspired stools and chairs surround coffee tables set in front. The bar itself is made of green onyx. The top half of the bar is an open brass frame showcasing a wide range of top-shelf spirits. A palette of tobacco brown with pops of petrol blue, burnt orange, and vintage-inspired patterns and textiles, make the Lobby Bar a warm and inviting space.

The hotel’s overall design draws “upon a mixture of West Coast Modernism with a playful dash of old-school Hollywood glamor, whilst maintaining a contemporary and elegant approach.” Steinberg Hart is responsible for the architecture, while London-based designers Tara Bernerd & Partners created the decor. Ten Five Hospitality oversees food and beverage.

The 11-floor property features 190 guest rooms, including 16 suites.
